Dynamic Staffing and Scheduling

Share |

All scheduling systems are not the same. There are many components of labor inefficiency and waste that arise from uninformed and last minute staffing decisions. Activities surrounding daily staffing are often hectic and frenzied, forcing managers to make the easy choices, rather than the best or most cost effective.  The complexities of maintaining proper staff coverage when addressing changing census and acuity, skill mix issues, staff call-outs are well documented. But it is much more than “what do you need and who do you have”.  Knowing who is best is equally as important.  Expecting excellence in this area from a system primarily designed as a bolt-on extension to an accounting, payroll or time and attendance system is not realistic.

Most nursing departments have unfilled shifts in every schedule, despite best efforts to balance and fill them. Many of these open shifts are not due to vacancy, but primarily due to the challenge of managing scheduling variables. When under pressure to fill shifts, managers and staff resort to "let's make a deal" negotiations when calling in, floating or calling off staff. Some departments even report policies that incentivize withholding labor to increase premium pay! Concerro's ShiftSelect was the first solution, and still the only qualification-based approach, to totally solve this problem effectively and sustainably.
